In Season in April!

Before getting into what's in season for April, I have to tell you that while I was at the National Zoo this past weekend for Kate's birthday guess what flew into my head? Yup. Another bird. This time a pigeon. Once again, it didn't hit me square in the head but instead brushed my hair with its wings as it flew by. Honestly, is it my shampoo? Is the Universe trying to send me a message? (For more on this unusual topic, see my Rainbow Fruit Tart post.)

Okay. Produce time.

Now's when it starts to get good. Strawberries, asparagus, cucumbers, and tomatoes, among other goodies, have entered the scene. Even though Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons of the year, it's really hard to beat the Spring and Summer months when it comes to food. Shawn teases me because when we plan vacations he tends to look at logistics and I tend to look at where and when we can get the best food. I've never been to California (I know!) and I can't imagine going at any time other than when the produce there is at its very, very best. (Even though I understand it's pretty dang great all year round.)

The list below is for all of the standard fruits and veggies across the U.S., but for what's peaking right now in your area, refer to this awesome, awesome Peak-Season Map by Epicurious.
Dig in!!
